Time traveling artists in Bungaree!
Bungaree students bring their imaginative creations to life during a 2-week Creative Challenge residency.
Artists Kero O’Shea, Sam Hughes and Nathan Hoyle spent 2 weeks at Bungaree Primary School exploring the 2021 Creative Challenge theme of ‘Gathering’. This residency took place on the lands of the Binjareb and Whadjuk Nyoongar people. This residency was proudly supported by BHP.
During their first-week students learnt and experimented with a variety of visual arts techniques. Students stretched their imaginations to the limits while making their very own crazy creature. The young artists then developed their creature characters further using a range of filmmaking techniques in collaboration with West-Australian film-maker and creative Kero O’Shea. Students explored filmmaking techniques such as scriptwriting, animation, sound effects and camera techniques to bring their quirky characters to life!
The students took a journey into the future for their second week of Creative Challenge. Artist Nathan travelled to them from the future with news that their creatures had become extinct! In response, the children had to create skeletons for their creatures and decorate them for an exhibition. The bright young artists utilised sculptural and painting techniques to put together an amazing gathering of beautifully decorated creature skeletons.
The exhibition was all set up! But with only a few minutes left until opening the children felt that there was something missing. They decided an exhibition doesn’t make any sense without plaques! The students quickly devised names, place and year of origin for their creatures and with that last cherry on top in place the exhibition was open! Teachers, other students and staff were invited on student-led tours of the exhibition while enjoying an array of healthy snacks and there was even a fake food fight at the end. Lots of fun had by all in Bungaree.
