Tristan's recital commences with selected works from Liszt's Italian Year of Pigrimage, a set of pieces paying homage to Italian Renaissance art and literature. This selection will feature works inspired by Michelangelo, Raphael and Petrarca.
This year marks 200 years since Beethoven completed his greatest Piano Sonata, Op. 106 Hammerklavier'. Beethoven believed it would take many years before this work would be properly understand, and it remains neglected and controversial to this day. Nonetheless, Liszt championed this work throughout his life, and even gave the world premiere performance of the Hammerklavier' in Paris in 1836.
