Young Artists Create Large Scale Art in Wiluna!
In October of this year, AWESOME artists Rae Cottam and Luke Joseph Ryan travelled onto the lands of the Martu People, to spend a one-week residency at Wiluna Remote Community School. They worked with the students to explore visual art, collaboration and large scale mosaic work.

The artists and the participants started with some exciting discussions about the 2024 Creative Challenge theme of heart and how this could be represented in their own unique art. Inspired by the theme, the students brainstormed and shared with their peers what made their hearts happy. Each young artist transformed their ideas into visual symbols and paintings on their own square tile. Each tile created by the students were pieced together to form a large mosaic with the Aboriginal flag at the centre, encapsulating their distinct self-expression and connection to each other, their culture and community.

To celebrate the young artists hard work and creativity the final mosaic was displayed outside on the final day of residency. Students, school staff and community members came to view and celebrate the works, the young artists proudly showing off their individual pieces! A generous spread of fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks were available for all to enjoy as they celebrated the residency conclusion.

Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.

This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go for 2&5 message.
